Swimming beach at lake

From Memorial Day through Labor Day, Clermont County Public Health tests the water weekly for bacteria levels at six recreational areas in the county. High bacteria levels in the water can make you sick when you swim. If the bacteria levels are considered too high, an advisory will be issued on the Ohio Department of Health’s Beachguard website.

During an advisory, people are asked to stay out of the water and to be aware of the health effects if they do swim.

Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs)

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources and Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) monitor water conditions for Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs). Tests are conducted to check for toxins that are caused by HABs. If toxins are found at unsafe levels in the water, the Ohio Department of Health will issue an advisory via the BeachGuard site.

In addition, the EPA offers a dashboard to view algal bloom activity in Clermont County. If you spot an algal bloom on a public waterway, you can report it to the EPA via its reporting app, Bloomwatch.

For physicians or veterinarians who suspect HABs exposure in their patients, please visit the Ohio Department of Health's Screen for Green program.
